Exploring the Supreme Court Internship Program: A Unique Opportunity

For over four decades, the Supreme Court Internship Program has provided students with a distinctive chance to gain in-depth knowledge of the Supreme Court of the United States. This prestigious program offers a rich educational experience and valuable exposure to a professional environment. Interns have the opportunity to attend Court sessions and engage in seminars organized by the Supreme Court Fellows.

Understanding the Internship Responsibilities

While interns do not work directly with the Justices or on cases pending before the Court, they play a crucial role in supporting various administrative functions. Responsibilities often include answering phones, responding to public inquiries, and assisting with other assigned projects.

It’s important to note that the Supreme Court Internship Program is unpaid. However, interns are encouraged to seek academic credit through their institutions of study, in consultation with the Program.

Available Internship Opportunities

Internships are available across several offices within the Supreme Court:

Office of the Counselor to the Chief Justice

Established in 1972, the Counselor to the Chief Justice supports the Chief Justice in both Court-related and broader federal judiciary responsibilities. Interns in this office assist with background research, drafting correspondence, and tracking news articles. A full-time commitment is required.

Office of the Curator

Created in 1973, the Curator’s Office focuses on preserving and promoting the history of the Supreme Court. Interns work on projects related to Visitor Programs, Collections Management, and Digital Assets Management. They also gain valuable skills through public speaking and interacting with visitors.

Public Information Office

The Public Information Office, founded in 1935, manages media relations and public inquiries. Interns help with responding to inquiries, assembling Court orders and opinions, and supporting press seating during Court sessions. They also assist with press materials and logistical support for media projects.

Office of the Clerk

The Office of the Clerk is responsible for managing all documents filed with the Court. Interns in this office assist with responding to case-related inquiries, processing Court filings, and maintaining records. They work closely with full-time employees on a range of tasks.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Supreme Court Internship Program, applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. They must have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate study and meet one of the following criteria:

• Actively enrolled in an academic program during the internship term.
• Returning to a degree program immediately following the internship term.
• Participating in a federal fellowship program.

Note that law students are not eligible for this program. Preference is given to applicants who can commit to working eight-hour days, five days a week. Some offices may accept part-time interns, but a minimum of four days per week is required.

Interns for the fall and spring terms should be prepared for a 16-week commitment, while summer interns are expected to work for at least 12 weeks.

Qualifications for supreme court internship program

The Supreme Court Internship Program is competitive, drawing applicants from a highly qualified pool. Ideal candidates demonstrate academic excellence, the ability to work collaboratively, flexibility, self-motivation, and impeccable trustworthiness. Good judgment is essential.

To apply, submit the following:

• A one-page cover letter
• A resume
• A college or graduate school transcript (official or unofficial)
• A short essay about a former Justice
• Two letters of recommendation (one from an instructor)

All documents must be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews, and offers are contingent on the successful completion of a security background check.

Application Deadlines

• Fall placement: June 15
• Spring placement: October 15
• Summer placement: March 1
