WHO IS SONAM WANGCHUK ?

Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer, innovator and education reformist. He is the founding-director of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, which was founded in 1988 by a group of students who had been in his own words, the ‘victims’ of an alien education system foisted on Ladakh

Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk recently concluded his 21-day hunger strike in Leh, Ladakh. Wangchuk embarked on this hunger strike to demand statehood for Ladakh and its incorporation into the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Why Hunger strike in Ladakh ?

During an exclusive interview of his hunger strike, Wangchuk emphasized that he has no intentions of entering politics. Instead, he urged the nation to rally behind the cause of Ladakh and urged citizens to use their votes wisely in upcoming elections to advocate for Ladakh’s interests.

While Wangchuk has ended his hunger strike, he made it clear that this is merely a transition into a new phase of the ongoing agitation. He stressed that the support demonstrated by the 10,000 individuals gathered at the strike site, along with the participation of over 60,000 others throughout the 20-day protest, highlights the collective aspirations of the people of Ladakh.

Earlier, Wangchuk had taken to social media to reiterate his plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to prioritize the preservation of the Himalayas and to implement the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh for the protection of indigenous tribes.

Expressing his disappointment with the lack of government response despite the significant public turnout, Wangchuk called for leaders of integrity and foresight to address the concerns of the region. He urged Modi and Shah to demonstrate statesmanship in addressing Ladakh’s demands.

Wangchuk’s hunger strike garnered attention not only for his personal sacrifice but also for the broader cause of Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional protection.
