Mukhtar Ansari, a convicted gangster and politician from Uttar Pradesh, passed away after suffering a heart attack in jail in Banda district.
A five-time MLA from Mau constituency, including two terms as a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, the 61-year-old had familial ties to former Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari. In April 2023, he was convicted for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and sentenced to 10 years in prison, while in March 2024, he received a life sentence in a fake arms license case.
Mukhtar Ansari’s Family Background
Remaining unmarried throughout his life, Mukhtar Ansari hailed from a distinguished lineage. His paternal grandfather, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, served as an early president of the Indian National Congress, while his maternal grandfather, Mohammad Usman, held the rank of Brigadier in the Indian Army.
Mukhtar Ansari’s Political Journey and Conflict with Brijesh Singh
Mukhtar Ansari’s entry into politics dates back to 1995 when he engaged in student union activities at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). His political career took off when he was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1996.

Upon assuming office in the Legislative Assembly, Mukhtar Ansari found himself entangled in a rivalry with Brijesh Singh, a dominant figure in the Poorvanchal region. The conflict escalated in 2002 when Singh’s convoy allegedly attacked Ansari’s, resulting in casualties. Although initially presumed dead, Singh survived, fueling ongoing animosity between the two leaders. Singh later backed BJP leader Krishnanand Rai, who defeated Ansari’s brother, Afzal Ansari, in the 2002 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Mohammadabad.
BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai met a tragic demise, being gunned down in public along with six associates, while Mukhtar Ansari remained incarcerated in connection with a riot case.
Mukhtar Ansari’s Tenure with BSP
In 2007, Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal aligned themselves with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Despite being in jail, Mukhtar contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi under the BSP banner, ultimately losing to BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi.
However, their association with the BSP was short-lived as the party expelled the Ansari brothers in 2010 upon confirming their continued involvement in criminal activities.
Following their expulsion from the BSP, the Ansari siblings established their own political entity, the Quami Ekta Dal (QED). Mukhtar Ansari contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi, challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, albeit unsuccessfully.
