India Telecom Growth 2024 : India’s telecommunications sector continues to witness robust growth, with the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) revealing significant milestones in both internet and telephone subscriber numbers.
Internet Subscriber Growth (India Telecom Growth 2024)
As of December 2023, India’s internet subscriber base reached an impressive 936.16 million, marking a quarterly growth rate of 1.96%. Within this vast subscriber pool, 38.57 million are wired internet subscribers, while the majority, at 897.59 million, access the internet wirelessly.

The internet subscriber base is further categorized into broadband and narrowband users, with broadband users comprising 904.54 million and narrowband users totaling 31.62 million.
Moreover, the increase in internet usage is reflected in the rise in monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services, which saw a 1.93% growth from Rs 149.66 in September to Rs 152.55 in December.
Telephone Subscriber Expansion
Simultaneously, India’s telephone subscriber (India Telecom Growth 2024) count surpassed the 1.19 billion mark, growing by 0.78% from the previous quarter to reach 1,190.33 million by the end of December 2023.
The overall teledensity in India also saw a notable uptick, rising from 84.76% to 85.23% during the December quarter. This growth was observed across both urban and rural areas, with urban telephone subscribers increasing from 658.46 million to 662.56 million and rural subscribers rising from 522.66 million to 527.77 million.

DTH Services
In addition to internet and telephone services, the TRAI report highlights the growing popularity of Direct-to-Home (DTH) services. Pay DTH services have garnered an active subscriber base of approximately 63.52 million, further complemented by subscribers of DD Free Dish, the free DTH service provided by Doordarshan.
On the other hand, telephone subscribers in India exceeded 1.19 billion by the end of December, reflecting a 0.78% growth compared to the previous quarter. The overall teledensity of the country also saw a slight uptick from 84.76% to 85.23% during the same period.
Urban areas recorded an increase in telephone subscribers from 658.46 million to 662.56 million (India Telecom Growth 2024), while rural areas witnessed growth from 522.66 million to 527.77 million subscribers.
