Former gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away on Thursday night following a heart attack in Banda jail.

Amid deteriorating health, Ansari was transferred to a hospital, where he eventually succumbed. The news of his demise led to gatherings at his residence in Ghazipur.According to the medical bulletin released by Banda Medical College, DGP Prashant Kumar confirmed the demise of Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari was admitted to the hospital at approximately 8:25 pm, where a team of nine doctors provided medical care until his passing.

Following Mukhtar Ansari’s demise, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar announced the enforcement of prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) statewide, prohibiting large gatherings. Additionally, heightened police presence has been implemented in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts.

The Samajwadi Party expressed condolences over Ansari’s passing, stating, “We deeply mourn the loss of former MLA Shri Mukhtar Ansari. May his soul rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. A humble tribute.”

Amid claims by his family members that he was being slowly poisoned in jail, Mukhtar Ansari’s demise occurred. Just two days prior, on Tuesday, Ansari had been admitted to the same medical college due to complaints of abdominal pain and an inability to pass stool for four consecutive days. He was discharged after a 14-hour observation and returned to Banda jail.

“Mukhtar mentioned being administered a toxic substance in his food while in jail. This marks the second occurrence, with a similar incident happening around 40 days ago. Recently, on March 19 and March 22, he was again exposed to this poison, resulting in his deteriorating condition,” stated Afzal, Member of Parliament from Ghazipur, during his brother’s recent hospitalization.

The UP prison department responded with a statement indicating that Mukhtar Ansari received immediate medical attention from the jail doctor after falling in the toilet at night.

Mukhtar Ansari, aged 60, has been incarcerated in prisons across Punjab and Uttar Pradesh since 2005. The notorious gangster-turned-politician faces more than 60 pending criminal cases. Following convictions in eight cases since September 2022, he was confined to Banda jail.

His name appeared on the Uttar Pradesh Police’s list of 66 gangsters last year, raising concerns among his family members about potential harm through a staged encounter.

On March 13, Mukhtar Ansari was handed a life sentence for forging documents to obtain an arms license in 1990. This marked his eighth conviction in the past two years, with a total of five-time MLA’s legal battles intensifying. Additionally, Ansari received a six-month imprisonment under Section 30 of the Arms Act.
