Heatwave Updates: IMD Issues ‘Red’ Alert, No Relief for Delhi, Haryana, and Other States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for a heatwave affecting several regions in North India on Monday.

The intense heatwave persists across several regions, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘red’ alert for North India on Monday. The IMD forecasts that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will likely continue in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan until May 28.

The IMD has also issued a ‘yellow’ alert for heatwave conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzzaffarabad, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Uttar Pradesh.

“Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are highly probable over many parts of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on May 27, 2024. Additionally, heatwave conditions are expected over isolated areas in East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat,” stated the IMD in its bulletin.

On Sunday, Phalodi in Rajasthan recorded the highest temperature in the country at 49.8 degrees Celsius. This was followed by Mungeshpur in Delhi at 48.3 degrees Celsius, Jhansi in Uttarakhand at 47.7 degrees Celsius, and Faridkot in Punjab at 47.4 degrees Celsius.

“The maximum temperature in West Rajasthan’s Phalodi is reaching 50 degrees Celsius. The next 3-4 days will see similar conditions in Rajasthan, prompting a red alert. Subsequently, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease… In Delhi-NCR, temperatures may soar to 47 degrees. This high temperature is anticipated to persist for the next three days, followed by some relief,” stated an official to ANI.

IMD’s Rainfall Prediction:
The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall in most areas and heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few coastal districts of West Bengal and eastern districts of Gangetic West Bengal, adjacent to Bangladesh, on Monday. The peak rainfall activity is expected until noon.

This forecast is in light of Cyclone Remal, which made landfall between the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts on Sunday night.
