Why does everyone hate on Hardik?

The hate towards new Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya is unwarranted, The hate on Hardik

Changes in leadership are never simple as they entail bidding farewell to a seasoned figure who has long been the cornerstone of the team. They are the embodiment of the brand, the force that shaped its identity. Think CSK, and MS Dhoni comes to mind. Mention RCB, and it’s Virat Kohli. While legends may have come and gone around them, these stalwarts remained synonymous with their respective franchises, lending them a distinct character.

However, there comes a time when transitions are inevitable. Initially, it may be hard to accept the immediate consequences of such changes, as nobody truly welcomes them, despite their inevitability in life.

Yet, transitions are a crucial part of the sporting journey. Every athlete’s prime days are finite, and preparing the next generation to take up the mantle is a natural progression. Ideally, grooming the next leader in the presence of the incumbent allows for a seamless handover, with the new captain benefiting from the guidance of their predecessor, who possesses a deeper understanding of team dynamics.

In preparation for the upcoming season, two successful IPL franchises parted ways with their long-serving captains, paving the way for a new chapter. Rohit Sharma, India’s current captain across all formats, and MS Dhoni were succeeded by Hardik Pandya and Ruturaj Gaikwad at Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. While Gaikwad’s affiliation with CSK and his endorsement by Dhoni eased the transition, Pandya faced more challenges, including being booed during his team’s initial game in Ahmedabad for various reasons.

Pandya made his debut for Mumbai Indians in 2015 and, over the ensuing six years, emerged as one of the franchise’s premier match-winners. Spotted by Mumbai, Pandya, an all-rounder with skills in both batting and bowling, became a vital cog in the Indian team across formats. In an era of specialized players, Pandya’s versatility brought balance to India’s playing XI, rendering him indispensable.

Crucial performances under pressure, such as in the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the league matches against Pakistan, showcased that Pandya’s talent wasn’t merely hyped but backed by tangible results.

Before the 2022 IPL mega-auction, Mumbai faced a dilemma over their Indian retentions. While Rohit Sharma was a given, the remaining spots were contested by Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite competition from stellar performers, Pandya’s unique skill set made him a compelling choice. Reports indicated his desire to captain an IPL team, despite never having led in T20s before, a dream initially dismissed as flamboyant. Undeterred, Pandya remained resolute.

Consequently, Mumbai, already led by Rohit, let Pandya go. He assumed captaincy for Gujarat Titans, his home state franchise, achieving success in their inaugural season and reaching the finals the next, silencing doubters and justifying his aspirations.

Returning to Mumbai Indians two years later, Pandya assumed captaincy, triggering mixed reactions. Allegations of betrayal from Gujarat fans and discontent from Mumbai loyalists ensued, compounded by claims of inadequate communication regarding Rohit’s removal.

However, both sides’ arguments falter. While fans demand loyalty, the league’s auction system permits player mobility. Pandya, with familial responsibilities, was enticed by a lucrative offer to return to Mumbai, aligning with his captaincy ambition.

Moreover, Mumbai’s decision reflects long-term planning. With Rohit nearing 37, grooming Pandya as the future captain is strategic. The move also facilitates Rohit’s mentorship, easing Pandya’s transition.

Critically, Mumbai’s decision benefits from Pandya’s proven leadership with Gujarat and anticipation of his future role as India’s T20 skipper. Embracing Pandya’s leadership, albeit challenging, promises long-term dividends for Mumbai Indians.
