Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed plans to phase out toll booths in favor of a new satellite toll collection system. In an interview with news agency ANI, he stated, “We are moving towards discontinuing tolls and implementing a satellite-based toll collection system. Payments will be automatically deducted from bank accounts based on the distance traveled. This system not only saves time and money but also significantly reduces travel time. Previously, the journey from Mumbai to Pune took 9 hours, but now it has been reduced to 2 hours.”

In response to concerns regarding high toll fees, the minister emphasized the benefits of highways in terms of time and fuel savings. He noted, “Previously, the journey from Mumbai to Pune took nine hours. Now, it’s just a 2-hour trip, saving seven hours of diesel consumption. Naturally, there is a cost associated with this convenience. We’re financing it through public-private partnerships, so repayment is inevitable.”

The minister further elaborated on the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which aims to enhance approximately 26,000 km of economic corridors. Nitin Gadkari underscored its importance in conjunction with the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and North-South and East-West (NS-EW) corridors. He expressed confidence that this initiative will significantly transform the nation’s infrastructure landscape by 2024.

He stated, “By the end of 2024, the destiny of our nation will undergo a profound transformation. My objective is to ensure that the road network of National Highways rivals that of America. I am confident in achieving this goal and bringing about significant change.”
