Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Detained Following High Court’s Rejection of Protection Request in Liquor Policy Case

With the Enforcement Directorate’s recent action, Arvind Kejriwal has become the first incumbent Chief Minister to face arrest. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s detention marks the third high-profile arrest from the party in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scandal, raising uncertainties about the party’s future. Despite assertions from AAP that Kejriwal will continue governing from confinement, questions loom over the operational dynamics.

Kejriwal’s arrest followed the Delhi High Court’s denial of protection from arrest in the liquor policy case. He had previously evaded nine summons by the ED, with the latest requiring his appearance for questioning on Thursday.

Comparatively, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, arrested by the same agency in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged ₹600-crore land scam on January 31, opted for a different course. Soren refused to sign the arrest memo until tendering his resignation to the Governor. Before his actual arrest, he strategically visited the Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan, ensuring he became a former chief minister, even momentarily.

Several former chief ministers in India have faced imprisonment, including RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, the late J Jayalalithaa of the AIADMK, Chandrababu Naidu of the TDP, and Om Prakash Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal.
