Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were recently spotted dining together at a restaurant in Palo Alto, sparking widespread speculation online. The image of the two influential tech figures seated across from each other in a Vietnamese restaurant surfaced on X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter. However, it has since been revealed that the picture is not recent, but rather dates back to 2017.

According to a CNBC report from 2017, the photo was captured by Steve Sims, the founder of luxury concierge service Bluefish, who was hosting a corporate client at the time. Sims took the picture during a smoke break around 9 pm, although he was not privy to the details of the conversation between Cook and Pichai.

Given that Apple and Google are prominent competitors in the tech industry, the sight of their CEOs dining together piqued the curiosity of many observers. Speculation has run rampant on Twitter regarding the nature of their meeting, with some suggesting it could involve personal matters, while others hypothesize about potential collaboration between the two tech giants.

The resurgence of this old image has prompted a wave of humorous reactions on social media, with users sharing their witty takes on the unexpected encounter between Cook and Pichai.

For those unfamiliar, Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of Google’s Gemini to introduce new generative AI capabilities in future iPhone models. According to a Bloomberg report, discussions are underway for Apple to license Gemini for its upcoming iPhones. These anticipated features may encompass AI-driven chatbots, coding aids, and other functionalities.

The two tech giants are said to be currently engaged in “active negotiations” regarding the integration of Gemini for the development of AI-powered tools destined for upcoming iPhone models slated for release later this year. Notably, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, experienced a 3% increase in premarket US trading, while Apple saw a 0.5% rise.

Nevertheless, according to the report, Apple has also initiated talks with OpenAI regarding the potential utilization of GPT models in future iPhone iterations.
